Monitor Your Central Vision with the Amsler Grid Test
A simple, effective tool for spotting early signs of macular or retinal changes from the comfort of home.
How to Use It
- Prepare your space – Make sure you’re in good light and wear your reading glasses if you normally use them.
- Position the grid – Hold or place the grid at eye level, about 12–15 inches (30–38 cm) away from you.
- Test one eye at a time – Cover one eye and focus on the dot in the centre of the grid.
- Look closely – While keeping your gaze on the dot, notice if the lines look straight and unbroken, or if you see any blurry, wavy, or missing areas.
- Switch eyes – Cover the other eye and repeat the test in the same way.
- Note changes - if you notice any distortion, blurring, or blank spots, don’t ignore them. Please contact your local optician or eye care professional for a full examination.
Next Steps for Protecting Your Vision
Even if your Amsler Grid test looks normal, it’s important to book a routine eye exam with your local optician. If you notice wavy lines, blurred areas, or missing spots, don’t wait — speak to your eye care professional as soon as possible.
